ESME TRADITIONAL RUGS

Eşme, being a settlement with Yörük-Turkmen origins, exhibits many features of nomadic culture. The root dye kilim and carpet culture are fundamental indicators of this. Woven with regional knowledge, Eşme kilims have structural features that are not found in other regions of Anatolia. Eşme Kilims are generally woven for commercial purposes, often commissioned by traders. In addition to this, there are kilims woven by the people of Eşme for their own homes, and to a lesser extent, some households still engage in weaving for their personal needs. Historically, the threads in old kilims woven by the people for their own needs were spun and twisted at home by the weaver, and then dyed with root dye in their homes. These kilims have shown distinctive features in terms of color, motif, and composition specific to the region. In Eşme, kilims are woven by women on upright looms called "Istar" in their homes. As the name suggests, Eşme kilim is, in fact, a traditional kilim weaving from the past to the present. Some of the motifs in these kilim weavings also carry certain meanings.
