  • HISTORY

Before the eras of history, the region that later came under the rule of Phrygia and then Lydia eventually fell under Persian dominance. The Persian rule persisted until 334 BC. Following Alexander the Great's Anatolian Campaign, the region underwent a change of hands. The campaign led to the amalgamation of Eastern and Western cultures, giving rise to the Hellenistic culture. This expedition marked the beginning of the end for Alexander the Great, leading to the fragmentation and dissolution of the empire. At the end of this process, the Uşak province and its surroundings became part of the Kingdom of Pergamon. Subsequently, around 189 BC, the Uşak province and its surroundings came under Roman rule.

After the Migration Period, the region that remained within the Eastern Roman Empire stayed under Byzantine rule until the 12th century AD. Despite occasional shifts between the Seljuks and the Byzantines, the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 and the Battle of Myriokephalon in 1176 saw the Seljuks gain control. The Great Seljuk Sultan, Kilij Arslan II, divided the country among his 11 sons, leading to the decline of the state. The region changed hands again, falling under the control of the Anatolian Seljuk State. During this period, due to Turkmen migrations, the demographic structure of the region underwent significant changes. With the weakening of the Anatolian Seljuk State, the Germiyan Principality was established, ruling the region until it came under the dominion of the Ottoman Empire.

In 1429, Uşak became part of the Ottoman territories and became a district of the Kütahya sanjak. Uşak played a central role in the bloody struggles during the War of Independence, suffering from Greek occupation and city destruction. It was liberated from enemy occupation on September 1, 1922. In the years of the National Struggle, to facilitate the rapid development and recovery of the city, necessary incentives and support were provided due to the material and spiritual damage suffered by Uşak. In 1953, Uşak became a province.
